Both business leadership and marathon training demand a clear vision, goal setting, and unwavering discipline to consistently execute a strategic plan over an extended period of time. Success requires the resilience to overcome setbacks, adapt to changing conditions, and maintain mental fortitude to achieve a difficult long-term objective. He has committed his career to advancing safety and health conditions in the construction industry by incorporating a vision based on his personal values. He is a recognized leader in the areas of mentorship, construction outreach, training, communication, team building and leadership.

The Safety Initiative
Story
Health - Friends - Family - Personal Growth - Professional Competence
Incorporating the #MarathonMindset, Tim Irving intentionally moves within his five primary pillars of Health, Friends, Family, Personal Growth and Professional Competence and ensures all decisions fall within this framework. The #MarathonMindset is not a fad, short term solution or a quick fix, to better performance, it is a lifestyle. Tim has an ability to align his lifelong athletic experience with his professional accomplishments just as an athletic coach would develop a training plan for an athlete or an executive leader would implement an organization's strategic plan.
As a dedicated leader in the construction safety and health profession, he has a proven ability to build coalitions and cultivate relationships within a diverse network of groups such as union, non-union trade personnel, professional and business associations, government and non-profit organizations as well as school programs. His leadership and expertise are evidenced by his success on multiple initiatives, including: leading the US Department of Labors National effort addressing issues of Mental Health needs in the Workplace, initiating Suicide Prevention Awareness in the construction industry through Regional/National Campaigns; spearheading the Agency’s recent Trenching Safety Initiative which focused on internal training and National Stand-Down efforts; enhancing the National Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction to include a Premier Partners effort; as the Designated Federal Officer for the 15 member National Advisory Committee on Construction Safety and Health (ACCSH), and OSHA leading by example and supporting the construction industry by transitioning OSHA compliance officers from wearing traditional hard hats to new ANSI Type 2 safety helmets.
Prior to his appointment as acting Director/Deputy, Tim spent his safety career in the Boston Construction market. He began at Clark Construction on the Joseph Moakley Courthouse on Fan Pier, and then as a safety manager with Bovis Lend Lease, where he worked on the Millennium Place towers, the 10 Saint James office Building and the Research Center for Merck Pharmaceutical.
After joining OSHA in 2001, Tim became a Compliance Officer on the construction strategic team and then Compliance Assistance Specialist in the Braintree Area Office, where he remained from 2001-2014. Tim also served as the Assistant Regional Administrator for the Cooperative State Programs in OSHA’s Boston Region.
Tim holds both a Journeyman and Master electrical licenses, has his degree in management from the University of Massachusetts, and has earned professional designations in risk management, (ARM) construction safety (CHST) and is a Certified Safety Professional

Suicide Prevention and Awareness Resources
Suicide rates for male construction workers are almost twice as high as for working men overall. Construction workers overall account for about 17% of overdose deaths among the working population, even though they are only about 8% of the U.S. workforce. CPWR partners with North America’s Building Trades Unions (NABTU) and people across the industry to develop and share strategies for improving workers’ mental health, including preventing deaths from suicide and opioids. These efforts include REASON (Resources and Effective programs Addressing Suicide and Opioids Now), a quarterly newsletter that shares solutions, research, and resources, and five research studies funded by CPWR designed to advance knowledge and action.
